This past Saturday, Suidobashi, was busier than normal. At the Tokyo Dome there was a NiziU concert, at Tokyo Dome City Hall there was a male idol group event, and in the famed Korakuen Hall there was Deep 110 Impact, where three titles were on the line. Over a period of 9 fights, 2 new champions were crowned, one was defended, and both 42 year olds on the card lost, despite Nakamura stunning Kanda badly in the final round. All in all, the event delivered exciting fights, with 5 of the 9 ending in finishes, and it was well attended.
Oshima smashes Furuse
In the lead-up to this fight, Oshima laughed as she commented, “[Furuse’s] first priority is as a mom and if she’s injured, she won’t be able to do that so well. If I get the submission, I might break her arm, so I hope she taps quickly… so she doesn’t get hurt.” Well, Oshima got her wish. Somewhat reminiscent of her fight with Hime, she went full “damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead” and wasted little time charging at Furuse in order to get her down. While she ate some shots on the way in, it paid off and she got Furuse to the mat almost immediately, moving to full mount in the process. Once there, she worked for a double wrist-lock and eventually transitioned to a scarf hold armlock. After locking it on, she landed some punches, then cranked it and got the quick tap, just like she had hoped. With this victory, Oshima has now defended each one of her belts.
After the bout, Oshima, who seems to never be pleased with her performances said the following: “I’d like to thank Furuse for taking the fight. Since she’s a striker, I worked on my striking, but I still looked like a punching bag out there taking a lot of shots. While I’m relieved that I was able to defend the belt, Izawa and Park, who competed in Deep at the same time as me, are competing on a much bigger stage, so no matter how many times I win, I’m not gonna be happy. But, currently, my abilities aren’t on the same level as theirs’, so I’m going to keep working hard. Please continue to support me.”
Kitaoka and Nakamura lose via Decision
Both Kitaoka and Nakamura, the oldest fighters competing at 110 Impact, lost unanimous decisions in similar fashion. Both were unable to get their opponents down for any considerable amount of time and as a result the fights turned into striking affairs. However, it is worth noting that Nakamura did have his moments and did much better striking with his opponent than Kitaoka, who seemed to be primarily on the receiving end of things. Nakamura also briefly locked on a bulldog choke near the end of the fight, but Kanda was able to escape. Kitaoka, to his credit, never stopped coming forward and despite his poor record of late, the fans showed their admiration, with some even rising and giving him a standing ovation as he made his way backstage.
Ishizuka handles Coro, wins title
Ishizuka made the most of this title shot, dropping Coro in the opening round and never letting the then champion take the initiative. Throughout the second and third rounds, Ishizuka was able to consistently get Coro to the ground and keep him there, while also landing some GNP. Coro never had him in trouble, so it will be interesting to see what Deep does with their new champion. At 35 years old, he isn’t a Spring Chicken anymore, but he has put together 5 wins in a row now, with 3 finishes. Deep champions have a history of competing on the big stage at Rizin, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Ishizuka appears on a Landmark card in the near future.
While his performance doesn’t warrant an immediate rematch, Coro had a fan section at the event, where they were all waving handmade Coro fans, so he has some degree of popularity. His recent engagement to Seika Izawa and victory at Rizin have also raised his name value, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him on a Landmark show again in the near future.
