Other Deep Women’s Action

Deep and Deep Jewels held a combined 4 events over the weekend and as a result, there were a lot of fights. In a prior article, we went over Sunday’s Deep Jewels card, but there were some other women bouts on Saturday and later in the day on Sunday. Notably, King Reina returned to action. You may remember that King Reina was suspended for 6 months for missing weight repeatedly. (She had previously missed weight at Deep Jewels 10, Deep Jewels 26, and at Deep 97 Impact) King Reina is vegan now and appears to have her weight under control. She lost close to 20kg (44lbs) and actually weighed in under the weight limit for this fight. Her opponent, Yoko Higashi was there representing Pancrase and the match was billed as Deep vs Pancrase. They even played the Pancrase theme song during her part of the pre-fight video. For those that aren’t familiar, Yoko was a high level judoka, having won the 2002 Japanese National High School Championship and was selected as an All Japan Athlete during college. She then became a judo coach before transitioning to MMA. She is pretty interesting, she is a single-mother and said that she wants to help develop female fighters so they can be sent to compete for organizations like Invicta.

Despite getting her weight under control, King Reina wasn’t able to make a triumphant return and lost an unanimous decision to Yoko. As is often the case between two grapplers, the fight turned into a striking affair, where Reina looked good in the early parts of the fight, often charging forward with punches and pushing Yoko to the cage. However, Yoko repeatedly threw punches to the body and head and as the fight went on, Reina started to slow down and as she got tired, she stopped moving her head. As a result, she would rush forward and take stiff jabs and straights directly to the head. A cut was opened up inside her mouth and she started to bleed from the mouth. To her credit, Reina never stopped coming forward, but it just resulted in her taking more punches. After the fight, both fighters were exhausted, and Yoko gave her post-fight speech between breathes in the cage with her son, who had cheered for her non-stop throughout the entire match. This fight was the co-main event and a lot of people in the crowd seemed particularly interested in the fight, with loud supporters for both fighters.

On the other non-Deep Jewels cards, there were two pro fights and three amateur fights:

These are all fighters that Deep is in the process of developing. I have noticed Kyoka, Saki, and Momoka all being mentioned in the media so it looks like Deep and Deep Jewels are already working on developing the next generation.
