This September, Mizuki Furuse will return to action against Nisse at Deep Jewels 34. For those unfamiliar with her, here is our article going over her background. (Header photo is courtesy of Mizuki Furuse)
When Furuse steps in ring, it will be roughly a year and a month since she sat in front of the media after Rizin 22 and announced that she was going to take some time off. At the time, she explained that she felt she was fighting too often and that it was hindering her ability to develop as a fighter. There may be some truth to that, as up till that point in her career, she was essentially fighting every couple of months. Since announcing her intention to take some time off, she has gotten married, given birth to a daughter, and switched gyms. When asked about this time off, Furuse told us that the time off has allowed her to get a new perspective on martial arts and that it also gave her a good opportunity to re-evaluate herself. She also mentioned that she and her husband, a fellow fighter, spend most of their time either training or working, which may explain how she is able to return to action so quickly after giving birth.
Before she got pregnant, Furuse was supposed to take part in the Deep Jewel’s Microweight Tournament finals against Amp the Rocket, but she was forced to withdraw when she became so. At the time, she was fighting in both the Atomweight and Microweight divisions and she plans to keep this up, stating that wants to become a champion in both divisions and then return to the Rizin ring. In order to achieve these goals, she will likely need to defeat her upcoming opponent, whom she describes as an emotional fighter with strong feelings. In contrast, Furuse described herself as not really one to express her feelings so she hopes to fight smart and win this match using superior technique and skills.
Not related to her fight career, she also talked to us about her favorite anime, dragon ball, and how it is actually partially responsible for her becoming a professional fighter since it was what motivated her to go to judo gym when she was in 6th grade. She also talked about her passion for physical training and mentioned that she will sometimes go to the gym in the middle of the night so she can train. She credits this passion as one of the reasons she is able to fight so soon after giving birth, mentioning that she was doing high intensity workouts and dieting before she even had a fight scheduled. Finally, she also brought up that she enjoys horse racing, which may be an understatement. Earlier this year in April, she tweeted that she had bet roughly $100 and turned it into $1,500 in one race.
